Scripture and Spirit

If you have fallen out of reading the Scripture on a regular basis, Lent is a great time to renew that practice again. If we want to know Jesus more, we have to spend time in the Scripture. Jesus is the Word made flesh. It is absolutely impossible to grow in our relationship with God if we are not reading the Bible often. There is nothing more important in your day that finding a few minutes to read Scripture. Just 5 minutes of Scripture a day will change your life.

One of the most challenging questions in my discipleship band experience is this question: how might the Spirit and the Scripture be speaking in your life? This question actually assumes that the Spirit and the Scripture have the incredible ability to speak into our lives. Coming together each week and asking this question with the guys in my band has encouraged me to read more and more regularly over the last couple of years.

Reading used to very difficult for me. In elementary school, I struggled with reading so much that I needed additional classes to help me improve as a reader. I always looked at reading a chore. Reading was something that I had to do for school. It was something that took so much time and concentration for me. The thought of curling up with a good book and reading for hours was the most boring and non-life-giving that I could imagine. The only thing worst than reading would be reading aloud for other people to hear. Even today, I can talk in front of people with much ease, but reading aloud is so much harder. You don’t even know how much I practice reading Scripture and reading other liturgy before standing in front of our congregation. Even with all that practice, I still cannot make it through a worship service without a couple of reading mistakes.

If God can transform me into a person who is hungry to read the Scripture, then God can transform you. The more I read the Scripture the more I hear God’s Spirit speak into my life. God is actually speaking into our lives all the time through the Holy Spirit. We actually need to slow down enough and to be undistracted enough so that we can hear what God is speaking to us. God has a plan, purpose, and calling for each one of us. During Lent, I hope you will take time to listen to what God is saying to you.

In His Grip,
Mike Toluba
